Description

From Danto to Digital: Art and Aesthetics in the Age of AI" explores how technology reshapes art and its perception, using theories by Arthur C. Danto and Walter Benjamin. Participants will examine the effects of digital tools and AI on art creation and consumption, discussing Danto's "Artworld" and Benjamin’s "aura" within a modern context. Reflecting on themes of authenticity, meaning, and ethical issues, they’ll investigate the democratization of art and AI’s impact on viewer interaction. The course encourages a nuanced understanding of art in the digital age, empowering participants to critically engage as viewers and critics.

Learning objectives

  • Understand the influence of technology on art perception, with a focus on the viewer's role.
  • Critically analyze theories by Arthur C. Danto and Walter Benjamin on art in the digital age.
  • Explore the impact of AI and digital tools on art creation and consumption.
  • Reflect on the viewer's engagement with both traditional and AI-generated artworks, considering themes of authenticity and meaning.

Methodology & assessment

Throughout the duration of the course the participants will be working in different groups and individually as well. We will process the texts together, meticulously finding the contemporary aspects in referenced readings. The participants will take part in different disputes, both in teams and individually. They will learn how to argue their viewpoint with a carefully constructed argument structure. At the end of the course, group works and individual performances will be evaluated equally.

Certification details

The Learning Agreement sample includes all course details (skills, objectives, outcomes, timetable). Upon completion, participants receive a certificate of attendance, and their Learning Agreement Complement or Europass Mobility Certificate will be signed. The course meets European Commission Quality Standards, e.g., "a day of physical course activities includes at least five hours of learning activities" and "the course setup provides opportunities to meet peers from other countries."
