FREINET STUDENT COUNCIL

The Freinet technique "Student Council" is a democratic and participatory approach designed to engage young students in the governance of their classroom environment. Developed by French educator Célestin Freinet, this technique encourages even the youngest learners, aged 4-8, to take an active role in decision-making processes. In a Freinet classroom, the Student Council typically meets regularly to discuss issues, plan activities, and resolve conflicts. Through this method, children are empowered to voice their opinions, propose ideas, and vote on matters that affect their daily school life. This practice not only fosters a sense of responsibility and ownership among students but also helps them develop critical thinking and communication skills (Acker, 2007).

For students aged 4-8, participating in a Student Council can have profound educational and developmental benefits. At this formative age, children are learning to navigate social dynamics and understand the importance of community and collaboration. The Freinet technique supports these developmental milestones by providing a structured yet flexible platform for young learners to practice negotiation, empathy, and democratic participation. By engaging in discussions and collective decision-making, students gain confidence in expressing their thoughts and learn to respect diverse perspectives. This early introduction to democratic principles and collaborative problem-solving lays a strong foundation for their future social interactions and civic engagement (Boulanger, 1999).
