Sustainability: World climate change. Water management in a Mediterranean island (Larnaca - Cyprus)

H2O is a simple formula leading to the possibility of creating life. Water is life. A small change in its characteristics can imply a complete change of the balance of the Earth. Today, one of our major concerns is water shortage, or its excess, both causing climate changes. Thus, the resulting human consequences range from large-scale migration to potential conflicts.

Description

Climate change has become a pressing global issue, severely affecting various environmental aspects, especially water resources. Mediterranean islands, like Cyprus, are particularly vulnerable. Shifting climate patterns have led to reduced rainfall and rising temperatures, resulting in less freshwater availability. Addressing these challenges requires sustainable solutions—meeting current needs without compromising those of future generations. Sustainability connects past, present, and future, promoting choices that minimize environmental harm.

In today’s fast-changing world, embracing sustainability is vital. Concepts such as ecoliteracy, cultural heritage, and environmental awareness are deeply linked, forming the foundation for a more balanced and thriving future. This course highlights the importance of water as a key resource for national development and explores how Cyprus is navigating these climate-related challenges.

Learning objectives

The main objective of this course is to promote awareness about water conservation, sustainability of freshwater resources and how these situations can be managed in an island with scarce water resources but high consumption due to tourism. We want to highlight water as a strategic and essential resource for national development. Using Cyprus as a case study, the course will examine local responses and adaptive strategies that address climate-driven water scarcity and support sustainable growth. Additionally, we aim to raise awareness to nature conservation as the island hosts a vast variety of migratory birds like flamingos, ducks, swans etc. in protected wetlands.  The course will emphasize how all the above elements work together to support a healthy ecosystem and cultural continuity in the face of climate challenges.

Methodology & assessment

Our courses blend theory, practice, and participants’ work experiences. The exchange of practices and methodologies creates a rich environment of examples and ideas, adaptable to each participant's reality. Our pedagogical materials, available under Creative Commons (CC), meet Erasmus+ criteria and integrate various teaching methods with ICT to support effective learning. Participants are asked to create a simple activity (lesson plan or PowerPoint) and upload it to our platform, building a shared material bank. To ensure smooth operation, we provide daily briefings and use a group communication tool to handle any changes. Our goal is to enrich the learning experience and foster strong relationships between participants and trainers, encouraging future partnerships and collaborations.
