Using a relevant poster (https://www.oysterenglish.com/idiom-site.html ) we first set off to define ‘Idioms’ and to think of examples both in English and in L1. Then the students were instructed to guess the meaning of idioms used in example sentences.

The next activity was a card game. The students were split in groups of four. Each group was given a set of idiom cards and a set of definition cards and were asked to match the idioms to their meanings. 

As a follow up, they were given a worksheet with gapped sentences to complete using the correct idiom.

Finally, it was time to draw and guess. The students took turns to choose an idiom and draw a picture to illustrate it. The rest of the class tried to guess the idiom and we all had “a whale of a time”!
