Rural Schools: Transforming Challenges into Opportunities through eTwinning

In rural areas, small schools play a crucial role in meeting the unique needs of the local community. These small schools are more than just schools for learning; they are important for promoting social cohesion and preserving community identity. Small schools offer several overlooked advantages, such as smaller class sizes, personalised attention, and close relationships.

Description

However, such schools often present unique challenges in education, such as the lack of infrastructure or insufficient equipment to implement ICT tools, the shortage of permanent teachers or the low participation of parents in rural school settings.

This course aims to stimulate discussion among the participants on the challenges faced by small schools in rural areas and find the way to turn them into opportunities in their school context.

Through this course, participants will:

  • Explore how to effectively address diverse students' skills and competences within a single classroom
  • Assess the current situation in their rural schools in terms of the participation and collaboration of different stakeholders
  • Develop strategies to promote a whole school community culture through the collaboration of different stakeholders
  • Recognize the advantages of eTwinning projects and online collaboration
  • Discover web tools that enhance online collaboration among remote schools

Methodology & assessment

The course participants will be assessed through the (short) course learning–tasks offered at the end of each module, and the final module task – which will include the option to consider either the personal benefits that can result from taking part in a professional learning network or the steps involved in designing a meaningful learning network for a community of teachers or other educators.
