Description

Join the course on EU Academy: academy.europa.eu/courses/develop-stem-skills-using-cross-curricular-teaching-pathways

This course is designed to equip teachers with the knowledge and strategies needed to integrate STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) principles across various subjects.

Whether you teach STEM or another discipline, you’ll gain practical strategies to design engaging lessons that encourage students to connect concepts, explore real-world challenges and take ownership of their learning.

As the educational landscape evolves with a growing emphasis on cross-curricular learning and the development of critical skills, this course will provide you with effective strategies to create a more dynamic, interconnected classroom.

Throughout the course, you will explore how to design learning pathways that link STEM concepts with other disciplines. These pathways will enable students to engage with real-world problems from diverse perspectives, helping them better understand the world around them.

You will also learn how to structure flexible learning routes that empower students to take an active role in their education. By guiding their learning experiences and applying STEM skills in context, students will deepen their understanding while becoming more confident, independent learners.

Learning objectives

  • Discuss cross-curricular approaches to integrating STEM, including their benefits for students' holistic learning.
  • Analyse and apply key STEM teaching methods and effective pedagogies to create lesson plans or instructional activities for the classroom.
  • Develop learning pathways that link STEM with other subjects to demonstrate enhanced student understanding.
  • Design and evaluate project-based learning activities that empower students to make choices, encourage critical thinking, foster collaboration and develop STEM skills through real-world problem-solving.

Methodology & assessment

This self-paced course is already available online. It is adapted from a version that ran from Monday, 19 May 2025, to Wednesday, 4 June 2025. Designed for flexibility, it lets you explore content and complete activities at your own pace—no deadlines, live sessions, or required meetings. While the original course included scheduled discussions and peer reviews, this version allows independent learning with the same materials and guidance. Forum discussions and Padlet contributions will not be moderated, fostering a fully self-directed experience. To support reflection, you'll be encouraged to assess your own work using the provided criteria.
