Technology supported assessment of and for learning in language education.
This course, targeted at teachers of Modern Languages in secondary, adult and vocational education, aims to familiarise language teachers with ways in which they can extend their repertoire of interventions and technology-mediated procedures to address issues related to testing and (formative) assessment in language education.
Description
In today's rapidly evolving educational landscape, effective assessment strategies are pivotal to facilitating language learning and ensuring student success.
This course is designed to equip language educators with the knowledge and tools needed to harness technology for assessment and support student growth.
By exploring & reviewing basic concepts related to testing and assessment we aim to first establish common ground.
After the introduction to the Formative Assessment Cycle with a focus on the role of the teacher further activities and topics will include:
- Scaffolding Procedures & Materials
- Assessing receptive and productive language skills and, in the context of the latter, with a focus on the 'SpeakTeach' methodology principles.
- Peer and self assessment skills development
- Trialling useful related digital tools incuding exploring options for Formative Assessment Practice using ChatGPT. A number of elaborate examples will be shown how to use ChatGPT in your teaching for formative approaches and thus work on students' quality awareness and supporting their critical thinking skills e.g. by having them edit a written piece and more. This way, teacher and students can gain insight into where students stand in relation to the learning outcome to be achieved and which appropriate follow-up steps can be taken, with or without (G)AI.
- Exploring related strategies and resources for future professional development (personal and in your school)
