Tackling Early School Leaving (ESL)
Early school leaving (ESL) is one of the major challenges in education policy within the European Union. ESL is not only an obstacle to general economic growth and employment but also it also one of the reasons for poverty and social exclusion.
Description
Early school leaving (ESL) is one of the major challenges in education policy within the European Union. ESL is not only an obstacle to general economic growth and employment but also it also one of the reasons for poverty and social exclusion. Young dropouts are much more likely to lack skills and qualifications, which leads to difficulties in entering and staying in the labour market – working in low-skilled and often unstable jobs.
Thus, the training course will focus on early school leaving (ESL) reasons and consequences, existing strategies, policies and measures to combat ESL as well as support teachers and student learning. During the training, emphasis will also be given to the involvement of all stakeholders – pupils, school, teachers, parents and local communities in order to create a systemic whole-school approach.
The daily programme can be found here.
Learning objectives
By the end of the course, participants will:
- Increased understanding of various causes and consequences of early school leaving
- Increased knowledge of policies, strategies and measurements to prevent ESL
- Ability to recognise students that are at risk of dropout and take necessary measurement
- Improved knowledge of the whole-school approach
- Improved ability to motivate and engage students
- Enhanced ability to find and use different teaching and learning resources
- Exchange of the best practices in different countries and their educational systems
- Improved communication and social skills
- Improved English language skills
Methodology & assessment
Attention will be given to how to implement the findings and skills in real daily working situations after the training course. Methods such as debate, pair and group work, and individual practical exercises will be used throughout the course.
Assessment of the course combines formal and non-formal assessment methods such as self-evaluation at the end of the course and formal evaluation forms provided by the organisation.
Materials, digital tools & other learning resources
This course helps educators prevent early school leaving through interactive materials, dropout prevention toolkits, and digital tools. Participants engage with case studies, scenario-based learning, and self-assessment tools to identify risk factors, implement intervention strategies, and support at-risk students. Practical resources promote student engagement and retention.
