“STEM and LEGO Education SPIKE Essential: Teacher’s Guide”

The purpose of this KA1 Erasmus+ Course is:To show how to cultivate the STEM competences from two aspects: the design principles of the STEM curricula content and the implementation strategies of STEM teaching; To explain LEGO Education SPIKE Essential as a part of the LEGO Learning System, preparing students with STE(A)M knowledge and 21st-century skills they’ll build in school and beyond.

MONDAY (Day 1)

Learning objectives

Provide knowledge and skills with a positive attitude towards innovations, feel the necessity for self-education, and adopt a student centered teaching approach; Develop teaching professional skills, trying to be "an effective model of competence"; Learning to learn competence; Developing a set of thinking, reasoning, teamwork, investigative, and creative skills that students can use in all areas of their lives through incorporating different subjects across an existing curriculum; Expanding teaching repertoire of pedagogical skills to meet 21st century education novel needs: Developing scientific and technological understanding, required by personal and societal decisions in the 21st century; Providing standards-based structured inquiry-based and real-world problem-based learning, connecting all four of the STEM subjects; Developing STEM competences: scientific concepts, scientific thinking, inquiry practice, information literacy competences, and attitudes and accountability; Systematically building a framework for STEM curriculum content from two perspectives: cross-disciplinary content knowledge integration around core ideas from a horizontal perspective and content articulation based on learning progression from a vertical perspective; Acquiring basic concepts of LEGO® Learning System; Understanding how to teach STEM using LEGO Education Spike Essential tools; Feeling confident using the hardware, software and curriculum resources; Taking in the LEGO Education approach to learning; Gaining ideas for how to facilitate encouraging hands-on lessons, supporting your students to build and improve 21st century skills;  Developing effective techniques to implement LEGO Education Spike Essential in the classroom, including lesson planning and classroom management; Intentionally incorporating different subjects across an existing curriculum.

Methodology & assessment

Training modules, each of which covered a different aspect of 21st century education and teaching skills and STEM and LEGO Education. Each module attempted to incorporate the existing knowledge and experience of the trainees in an effort to create a helpful learning environment while at the same time demonstrating the importance of collaboration and shared creation in the teaching – learning process. Coursework contained a mix of theoretical and practical knowledge. Participants practiced the necessary skills in order to be able to effectively use different teaching approaches with their own students. Other activities: Team – Building Sessions; Group Discussions; Activities of research about EU policy for recognition and validation of competences; Assessment of the "entry" competences and creation of individual learning pathway for the learners; Problem – Solving Activities; Debates; Questioning; Goal – Setting sessions; Decision – Making Sessions; Action – Based Strategies.

Certification details

At the end of the course, each participant will be awarded a Certificate of Attendance along with Europass Mobility.

Our certificates are in line with the Erasmus Quality Standards and so include the course's title, short description of its learning outcomes (if requested), dates, venue, the name of the course provider and the course director, number of training hours.

We support participants in every step of certification and validation of learning outcomes with specific focus on European instruments and Erasmus+ requirements such as Learning Agreement, Quality Commitment and Europass mobility.
