Description

This comprehensive 6-day course is designed to empower educators with the knowledge and tools needed to effectively implement Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) principles in their teaching practice. Participants will explore the intersection of content and language objectives, gaining insights into lesson planning, activity design, and assessment strategies tailored to diverse classroom settings.

Key topics include:

  • CLIL Fundamentals: Understanding and applying core CLIL concepts to enhance both content and language learning. Participants will engage with practical examples and reflect on their current teaching practices.
  • Lesson Planning and Activity Design: Learn how to structure lessons effectively across different stages, with a focus on aligning content and language objectives. The course covers Direct Instruction strategies, ensuring that activities are designed to support both academic and linguistic development.
  • Assessment and Feedback: Dive into the principles and practices of assessing student performance in a CLIL environment. The course will cover various assessment tools, the role of feedback, and how to use technology to facilitate these processes.
  • Self-Evaluation and Learner Autonomy: Discover innovative methods for fostering self-regulated learning, particularly in oral interaction skills. The course introduces the ‘SpeakTeach’ methodology, a practical approach to integrating self-evaluation into the classroom, enhancing student autonomy and engagement.

By the end of the course, participants will have developed a comprehensive set of materials, including lesson plans. Their enhanced professional skills and understanding of assessment cycles will enable immediate implementation of innovative assessment approaches in their teaching practice.

Learning objectives

This course aims to further enhance CLIL teachers’ skills related to lesson planning, designing effective learning activities and implementing assessment for learning in CLIL contexts.

Delegates will develop practical skills and deepen their knowledge on:

  • the stages that make up a CLIL lesson and strategies to increase the effectiveness of CLIL activities for each of these stages
  • how to create high-quality assessment materials and adopt appropriate assessment procedures to assess student pre-knowledge, progress and learning results.
  • how to implement the formative assessment cycle to promote motivation and ownership of learning
  • how digital tools can help to support student-centered teaching & learning and promote engagement and students` self-regulating study skills.

Methodology & assessment

The course combines short introductions in the form of brief plenaries on the various related (sub)topics and methodologies with follow up exploration of concepts and procedures with the help of practical illustrations such as related (student/teacher) materials and (video) recordings of teacher/student interactions.
Key functionalities of digital tools that can facilitate specific assessment-related activities will be presented. Course delegates subsequently explore the usefulness of one or more tools individually or in small groups depending on the perceived relevance and their needs.
At the end of the week delegates will share and discuss lesson plans with related assessment interventions which they created during the hands-on sessions.

To provide flexible access to course related tasks and resources a virtual learning environment (VLE) will be used. After the course concludes, participants will be able to access the VLE to promote follow-up communication and collaborative learning.

Preparation:

You are advised to bring your subject textbook(s) and/or related digital materials (if available) to the course to be used when creating / customising materials and activities.
