Description

Duration: 5 days (flexible for Erasmus+ mobility)

“Creative Classrooms: Visual Arts in Education” inspires educators to harness the power of visual expression to deepen learning across disciplines. Through explorations of art-making processes and critical analysis of imagery, teachers discover how to integrate drawing, painting, and mixed-media projects into core curricula—fostering creativity, visual literacy, and reflective thinking. Grounded in hands-on workshops and exemplar case studies, participants will adapt techniques for diverse age groups and learning styles, design culturally responsive art experiences, and assess student growth through both portfolio creation and peer critique. By the end of the course, educators will possess a flexible toolkit for transforming any classroom into a vibrant studio where students learn to observe, imagine, and communicate with confidence.

Learning objectives

By the end of “Creative Classrooms: Visual Arts in Education,” participants will be able to:

  1. Design and facilitate at least two cross-curricular visual-arts activities—such as mixed-media storytelling or data-visualization murals—that reinforce core content objectives.
  2. Apply foundational art-making techniques (e.g., sketching, collage, basic color theory) and adapt them for varied developmental levels and learning preferences.
  3. Implement formative and summative assessment strategies for visual-arts learning, including portfolio reviews and peer-critique protocols, to gauge both skill development and creative thinking.
  4. Curate and present culturally responsive art resources and exemplar works that reflect students’ identities and broaden their visual literacy.
  5. Foster a reflective studio culture by guiding students through art critiques, artist-statement writing, and metacognitive discussions about process, intent, and interpretation.

Methodology & assessment

Methodology
This course combines hands-on art-making workshops with collaborative design charettes and reflective critique sessions. Educators engage in guided demonstrations of techniques, co-create lesson prototypes in peer teams, and participate in gallery-style feedback circles to refine instructional approaches.

Assessment
Participants develop a mini-unit plan that includes two cross-curricular art activities, an assessment rubric (portfolio and critique criteria), and a reflective commentary on anticipated learner outcomes. Peer reviews during planning and facilitator feedback on final submissions ensure alignment with creative-thinking and content-integration goals.
