Activities for collaborative learning, virtual exchange and internationalisation@home

This course has been designed for teachers in primary, secondary, vocational and adult education interested in pedagogical possibilities to make language teaching more meaningful and to increase students’ involvement by using technology to promote collaborative learning and running and/or supporting international telecollaborative learning projects.

Description

This course addresses the methodologies and instructional approaches to innovative language teaching by integrating authentic communicative activities as part of school (tele-)collaborative learning and (virtual) exchanges.

Essential teacher competencies will be developed to effectively orchestrate and mentor telecollaborative learning activities.

Ways to use video conferencing and collaborative ICT tools will be explored to pair students or groups with peers or native speakers globally, cultivating an immersive learning experience and develop related teacher competences including organizing and mentoring telecollaborative learning activities with the help of educational  technologies  supporting international projects in the school run by colleague teachers of other subjects.

Learning objectives

The aim of the course is to promote participants’ professionalism in using, adapting and designing (project) tasks involving the practice of pairing students or groups of students to other learners (or native speakers) using social ICT tools such as document sharing, collaborative writing, video conferencing for collaborative learning while increasing students’ language and cultural proficiency.

On completion the participants will:

  • have a clear understanding of the concept of Computer Mediated Communication (CMC) and its significance for second language acquisition
  • understand the principles and implementation of Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT).
  • be capable of designing engaging communication activities for both asynchronous and synchronous contexts
  • be able to select the appropiate communication tools for specific activities
  • know how to explore and evaluate the functionalities of applications for conferencing, tandem learning, and chat
  • be able to share experiences and insights related to trialling specific tools introduced during the course
  • have raised their awareness of the teacher competences inolved in realising collaborative projects (e.g. project & content design,  planning & management), available tools and related (EU) resources
  • be capable of implementing virtual exchange to support internationalisation & tele-collaboration.

 

Methodology & assessment

During the course plenary, tutor-led sessions will be offered on methodologies for computer mediated intercultural communicative proficiency development & presentations of related applications. Participants familiarize themselves with a number of the demonstrated ICT-tools and web applications relevant for networked and task-based language learning and do practical work individually, in pairs and/or small groups analyzing related materials and applying the concepts and principles presented. Participants are supported to develop language activities and collaborative projects for use in their own teaching practice and/or international school projects.
Preparation
A pre-course, online questionnaire could be provided to assess pre-knowledge and further align course content and procedures to needs and interests.
Participants are invited to also bring (local) digital content and/or select topics relevant for their current practice.

Materials, digital tools & other learning resources

Participants will be offered a virtual learning environment (VLE)  to access the course materials, tools and resources which include daily overviews of course activity & task instructions, related task completion templates, polling, reflections and task results sharing tools and lists with (further) reading & viewing materials. 

After-course access to the LMS is offered to promote follow-up communication and collaborative learning when exchanging (re)designed local practice.

Certification details

Personalised certificates will be made available for those participants who have actively particpated and successfully completed the various course activities including the final course product.

 

The certificate document holds the key course information including the number of tuition  & learning hours and the main topics covered.  
So requested individual EuroPass documents will also be updated.

    Full payment is due ultimately 10 weeks before the course start date.

    Cancellation is free up to 2 months before the course begins.

    No refund for cancellations within 7 weeks of arrival.

    In case of cancellation by TELLConsult due to force majeur, the course provider will refund the paid course fees but is not liable for any other expenses.
