Welcome to the activity for November!

This month is often associated with gloomy or scary stories.

Students from Reunion tell you a story from their island.

The Tale of Granmother Kal

An old woman who looks like a witch, she appears as such in Reunion tales as well as in Reunion childhood and youth literature.

According to versions, in her youth Grandmother Kal was a slave, named Kalla, a beautiful, bewitching woman to the point that Zelindor, a brown slave and head of a black Republic, made her his wife.
They had a child who disappeared.
When her son disappeared, she went mad with grief and threw herself into the breaking waves of the ocean and she turned into a black bird.
Since then, on Reunion Island, when misfortune approaches, a bird comes to warn the inhabitants by uttering a particularly recognizable mournful cry.
Madame Desbassayns is sometimes associated with her . She was a wicked  slave owner known for mistreating and despising her slaves.

This legend  has given inspiration to reunion island people, they have created : games; history and other legends about  Gran mèr kal.
Some say she lives on the volcano.
