France in Antarctica
On Friday 27 January, we connected with the Mario-Zucchelli base in Antarctica to exchange with the Italian team. They had been on site for several weeks and were just finishing their mission. We learned a lot.
The researchers were gathered in a room to answer all the children's questions (18 classes connected at the same time). It is summer for them and the temperature is around 5°C but in winter it can be -40°C where they are.
There are 35 researchers in the station. In case of emergency, there is an infirmary and an operating room, but they can also go to an American station near them.
They study a lot of things (geology, atmosphere, biology). They make ice cores which are sent back to Italy afterwards for study. Meteorites are easier to find in Antarctica; you can see them better on the ice. Generally, they are lunar meteorites.
