Teaching European culture using a foreign language (CLIL)

This course introduces non-native language teachers to the CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) methodology, which combines subject teaching with language learning. Participants will learn how to integrate European cultural content into their lessons, develop practical teaching materials, and enhance student engagement through hands-on activities.

  • Day 1: Introduction and Team Building
  • Team-building activities to get to know each other.
  • Course arrangements, timetable presentation, and venue information.
  • Discussion on the objectives of the training course and creating a team contract.
  • Introduction to CLIL Methodology: Overview of the CLIL approach and its benefits in integrating content and language learning.
  • Day 2: CLIL in Practice
  • CLIL in European Schools: Exploration of how CLIL is implemented across different educational systems in Europe.
  • Can we teach all subjects in a foreign language? Discussing the possibilities and limitations of CLIL.
  • Examples of successful CLIL lessons in different subjects.
  • How to Prepare a Good CLIL Lesson: Strategies and guidelines for designing effective CLIL lessons that engage students.
  • Day 3: Exploring European Culture Through CLIL
  • Introduction to European culture: Basic facts and figures.
  • How to Teach Culture in a Foreign Language: Methods for incorporating cultural education in a language-learning context.
  • Discussion: Is Culture an Important Part of Our Lives?
  • Setting the Task: Participants are assigned a cultural project using CLIL methodology to prepare for the following days.
  • Day 4: Hands-On CLIL Project Development
  • Educational Materials Workshop: Teamwork on planning different stages of a CLIL project.
  • Gathering and organizing source materials and information to complete the assigned cultural project.
  • Creating materials for an effective CLIL lesson, including posters, notes, photos, and activities.
  • Day 5: Course Wrap-Up
  • Sharing Ideas and Experiences: Reflect on key takeaways and insights from the course.
  • Course Summary and Evaluation: Recap of the week and collection of participant feedback.
  • Certificates of Attendance: Distribution of certificates to participants.
  • Cultural Visit: Explore the local area to conclude the course with a cultural immersion activity.

The training course will be based on an active and hands-on methodology,

Lectures and presentations, exercises, discussions, teamwork, group work, role-playing, interactive activities.
Evaluation sessions will be used to provide participants with constructive feedback on their learning and on the activities carried out during the training course.
