Learning Through Music

Explore the power of music to motivate learning and revitalise your classroom. This course invites teachers to harness their own and their students’ creativity to encourage meaningful engagement and dynamic learning. This course is delivered by Atlantic Centre of Education in Galway in the west of Ireland.

Description

Learning through Music is designed to show how teachers can incorporate music into their classroom practice to stimulate learning, improve cognitive performance and build connections. As a teaching tool, music has the potential to aid language development, strengthen memorisation and enrich the classroom dynamic. Topics covered include discovering our 'musical mind maps', connecting with learner through their favourite music, using music to encourage inclusion and cohesion, and developing music-inspired projects. 

 

Learning objectives

  • Analyse the benefits of using music as a teaching tool.  
  • Discover the connections between music and cognitive performance, mood management and social cohesion.  
  • Learn about the power of group song and sound to create bonds and enhance learning. 
  • Evaluate materials/resources that can be used to develop music-based activities and projects.  
  • Workshop ideas for creative lesson plans. 
  • Enhance English language skills through content-based lessons. 
  • Build inter-cultural awareness through shared cultural, heritage and social activities. 

Methodology & assessment

The course takes place over 6 days and consists of 25 learning hours including tuition, cultural workshops, a guided historical walking tour of Galway city and 1 full-day cultural tour. The teaching approach is communicative and interactive with participants working to complete project tasks, including a portfolio of lesson resources and materials. Participants receive feedback on their work from the course trainers and also benefit from peer input when sharing with the group.

Certification details

Participants are awarded a signed Course Certificate in line with Erasmus Quality Standards showing the course name, the participant’s name, the course location, course dates and course duration.
