Getting more out of Video in (online) Language Education

This course aims to further develop relevant teacher competences and confidence when using video in language education. It contributes to developing participants’ skills in the use and (AI supported) exploitation & production of video for a range of curriculum objectives, both for f2f classroom contexts and blended learning, including flipping the classroom approaches.

Description

This Continuing Professional Development (CPD) course has been designed for language educators across primary, secondary, vocational, and adult education sectors.
It delves into the various purposes and related methodologies for the use of video within language education contexts. We will explore both 'traditional' and AI-enhanced tools for the processing and production of video content and the creation of engaging viewing tasks.

The course offers an immersive experience, empowering educators to enhance language education through innovative pedagogical practices.

Learning objectives

The objectives for the following topics covered in this course include:

 

  1. Strategic Video Selection and Task Generation: Develop competencies in evaluating and selecting appropriate, fit for purpose videos types
     
  2. Innovative Pedagogical Approaches: Learn to design & apply flipped classroom methodologies and synchronous/asynchronous online communication strategies leveraging video content, enhancing participants'repertoire of teaching techniques.
     
  3. Enhanced Comprehension and Assessment: Sharpen skills in creating video-based activities to develop listening and viewing comprehension, along with utilizing video tools for formative assessments.
     
  4. Fostering Creativity and Specialized Video Production: Familiarize delegates with the learning potential of video generation by learners and of specialized video formats (e.g., 3D, 360-degree), and with tools and procedures for personal and collegial professional development using & sharing classroom recordings.
     
  5. Empowerment through AI Tools: Equip educators with AI-enhanced tools, enabling them to efficiently produce, edit, and adapt videos for language teaching, fostering their confidence in employing technological advancements.

Methodology & assessment

Methodology
Delegates are requested to bring subject book(s) and/or related digital materials (if available) to be used when creating customised materials and activities.

The professional development approach is based on structured experiential tasks, peer learning and critical reflection. The course combines plenary, tutor-led introductions of methodological topics & presentations to demonstrate and discuss exemplary applications, materials & classroom procedures.

Follow-up activities include the exploration of relevant (new) apps and other digital tools/content. As well as applying the concepts and design principles presented by creating learning &teaching activities and related materials.

To provide flexible access to course related tasks and resources a course learning management system (LMS) will be used.
After-course access to the LMS is offered to promote follow-up communication and collaborative learning when exchanging (re)designed local practice experiences and materials.

Assessment
At the end of the week delegates will demo, discuss and assess the teaching & learning materials that they created during the hands-on sessions

Certification details

Personalised certificates will be made available for those participants who have actively particpated and successfully completed the various course activities including the final course product.

 

The certificate document holds the key course information including the number of tuition  & learning hours and the main topics covered.
