EMPOWERING LITERACY AND CRITICAL THINKING THROUGH ARTS 5 DAYS

This course is aimed at teachers and all those who would like to be able to facilitate meaningful interactions with the works of art and engage their learners in open-ended inquiry for development of critical thinking as well as to use art as stimulus for development of literacy skills. Participants are expected to have at least B1 level of English proficiency.

Description

The course consists of 25 didactic hours and includes the following modules:

  • Introduction of participants, outline of the programme, warm ups and ice breakers
  • Overview of the approaches to empower literacy and critical thinking through arts  
  • Building meaningful interactions with the works of art
  • Open-ended inquiry for development of critical thinking
  • Art as a stimulus for development of literacy skills (Paolo Freire's approach)
  • Individual support
  • Presentation of outcomes, discussion, evaluation and closing session
  • Teambuilding and networking activities
  • City tour or a cultural trip

Learning objectives

  • Overview of the approaches to empower literacy and critical thinking through arts.
  • Facilitating meaningful interactions with the works of art.
  • Facilitating open-ended inquiry for development of critical thinking.
  • Understanding and the ability to employ Freire’s approach to art as a stimulus for development of literacy skills.
  • Developing communication, collaboration, presentation, problem solving, negotiation, critical and creative thinking skills.
  • Providing and exercising creative ideas and practical resources for successful implementation of art-based projects and empower literacy and critical thinking in classroom.
  • Improving English fluency (official language of the course).
  • Promoting intercultural awareness.
  • Sharing experiences of empowering literacy and critical thinking through art from different organizations in order to help each of us to be more effective in our work.
  • Strengthening the European collaboration among people involved in empowering literacy and critical thinking through art in different contexts.
  • Providing insights into different education systems.

Methodology & assessment

Methodology is based on theoretical lessons and presentations of examples of good practice as well as discussions and experience comparisons. The course will focus on Paolo Freire’s approach to teaching literacy through arts. Some other tools used will consist of project work, study visits, workshops, writing assignments, reflection and evaluation.

Certification details

Certificate includes the topic, dates and location of the course. We can list the record of learning outcomes on the Europass Mobility Document on request of participants.
