Creating Green Classrooms

If you would like to incorporate positive ‘green’ practices into your teaching, the Creating Green Classrooms course is for you. Discover what practical strategies can be used to help students tackle the challenges of climate change.  This course is delivered by Atlantic Centre of Education in Galway in the west of Ireland.

Description

Teachers play a key role in communicating a progressive ‘green’ message to younger generations. Creating Green Classrooms is designed to show how teachers can bring lessons about sustainability and positive climate action into their everyday teaching. Topics covered include the challenge of going paperless, incorporating green-focused activities, connecting with green organisations, ideas for insipiring field trips and outdoor projects, and finding 'green' sources for educators. 

 

Learning objectives

  • Analyse ways of integrating ‘climate-positive’ practices into the secondary school classroom. Explore practical ways to make your classroom an eco-friendly space.  
  • Learn strategies for exploring green topics with your students – creative projects and activities.   
  • Evaluate materials/resources that can be used to develop green approaches in the classroom.  
  • Workshop ideas for creative lesson plans. 
  • Gain confidence using English in content-driven lessons.
  • Build cultural awareness through shared heritage, cultural and social activities.

Methodology & assessment

The course takes place over 6 days and consists of 25 learning hours including tuition, cultural workshops, a guided historical walking tour of Galway city and 1 full-day cultural tour. The teaching approach is communicative and interactive with participants working to complete project tasks, including a portfolio of lesson resources and materials. Participants receive feedback on their work from the course trainers and also benefit from peer input when sharing with the group.

Certification details

Participants are awarded a signed Course Certificate in line with Erasmus Quality Standards showing the course name, the participant’s name, the course location, course dates and course duration.
