The camera as a tool for seeing, how we perceive and understand the world. This course is aimed at teachers and school staff from pre-school level to primary, secondary, vocational, adult and special needs education. It is for anyone interested in photography as a means to discover and learn at the same time.

Description

"The camera is an instrument that teaches people how to see without a camera" - this is a quote by Dorothea Lang. In this course we will use and understand the camera as a tool for seeing.

Besides improving our the pedagogical competences through photography and understanding camera functions, rules in photography, image capturing and editing, we will also encounter the Camera Pen pedagogy from Finland. Furthermore we will get into visual storytelling and idea generation and we will improve our English at the same time.

  • Improving the participants’ pedagogical competences through photography.
  • Understanding of the camera, its functions, rules in photography, image capturing and editing.
  • Introduction to Camera Pen pedagogy.
  • Providing and exercising visual storytelling and idea generation.
  • Improving your English.
  • Promoting intercultural awareness.
  • Sharing experiences of photography teaching methods in education from different countries and perspectives.
  • Strengthening the European collaboration among people involved in the use of photography in education in different contexts.

Methodology & assessment

Methodology is based on daily exercises and tasks, both individually and in groups. In each case within a given time frame. Followed by assessment and discussion about the process and the final product. Participants will learn about photography as a "way of seeing" but also as a tool to facilitate inquiry-based learning and project-based learning.

Materials, digital tools & other learning resources

Participants must bring their own laptop or tablet, a camera and basic headphones. There will be a course-specific website for the course. Here you will find all teaching materials, digital tools and the practical tasks and exercises for the course participants.

Certification details

80% attendance is mandatory.

The certificate is issued on the last day of the course.

  • Course package content:

    The course fee includes the course. Accommodation, inner-city transportation and meals are not included in the fee. We are happy to provide recommendations for hotels and Airbnb near the course location. A guided city tour is part of the course.

  • Cancellation & changes:

    If the participant cancels the course more than 30 days before the start of the course, all fees will be refunded. If the participant cancels the course between 30 and 7 days before the start of the course, the fee will be refunded in the form of a voucher for future courses. If the participant cancels 7 days before the start of the course, the course fee will not be refunded.

  • Additional information:
    The options and conditions for change and cancellation, and the policy in case of unforeseen circumstances (force majeure).
