Description

The Azores, nestled in the heart of the Atlantic Ocean, comprise nine volcanic islands, with São Miguel Island serving as our starting point. Recently awarded Silver status as the world's first sustainable archipelago destination, the Azores provide an ideal backdrop for exploring and understanding sustainable practices. Participants will engage in a variety of activities, both indoors and outdoors, to deepen their understanding of nature preservation and sustainability.

Learning objectives

This course aims to empower educators with effective methods for teaching sustainability skills. By the end of the program, participants will:

  1. Learn diverse strategies to preserve nature and sustain ecosystems.
  2. Develop instructional techniques for teaching students, communities, and families about sustainability and nature protection.
  3. Explore dynamic teaching methods to enhance engagement and understanding.
  4. Create and implement innovative outdoor teaching activities that promote environmentally conscious actions.
  5. Invent new techniques for the preservation of nature, integrating them into educational practices.
  6. Introduce novel strategies within school settings to foster a culture of sustainability.
  7. Cultivate intercultural competencies and heightened cultural awareness to promote global perspectives.

DAILY PROGRAM

Monday:

Introduction of the course and participants
Icebreak group activity
Setting goals for participants
Presentations of participant's schools
Discussion and sharing experiences about group dynamics
Approaches to outdoor education: fear-based/risk discourse vs positive approach
Reflection on Nature vs. Sustainability

Tuesday:

Guided visit tour to Sete Cidades
Outdoor education on preserving wild nature
Pedestrian circuit of "7 Cidades"/"Lagoas das 7 cidades" (walking tour)
Developing spontaneity, intuition, and active listening during the walk
Exercise in pairs and alone in the middle of the forest
Touching and observing the wild environment
Reflection - How can I use outdoor preserving learning in my school?

Wednesday:

Boat trip to the islet of Vila Franca do Campo (morning on the islet)
Outdoor education around Vila Franca do Campo
Observing/visiting museums and traditional shops
Learning different ways to preserve nature in different situations
Seeing the evolution of conservation of nature in the last 50 years
Practice exercises
Reflection - What's the best strategy to teach everyone about preservation?

Thursday:

Outdoor education in Furnas about reserved areas of the Azores and the environmental education program
Visit "Terra Nostra Garden," learning about flora and fauna
Working in groups to create new strategies for nature preservation and sustainability
Developing spontaneity, intuition, and active listening
Reflection - What's the best strategy to teach everyone about preservation?

Friday:

Whale and dolphin watching
Developing considerations about wildlife and conservation
Learning efficient ways to teach students, community, and family
Sharing experiences of outdoor education
Reflection - What can we still do to be more sustainable and green?

Saturday:

"Outdoor Education" activity in the city of Ponta Delgada.
