Cultural activities
We first played a game called “Gymkana.” We were separated in groups and we had to do a couple of tasks. In groups were 2 Spaniards, 2 Italians and 2 Croatians. We got our tasks in aplication and explored Córdoba while playing it. After that we headed towards mosque called “ Mezquita-Catedral de Córdoba.”
It is located in center of Córdoba. It was built from 785. to 987. year, but other architects continued to add parts until the late 18th century. There is also a yard in which you can relax. Styles of mosque are Islamic, Byzantine, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque. It will take your around an hour to visit whole mosque.
Next day we had a presentation with professor from Spain about Cordoba’s culture and the most important part about Medina Azahara. We learned with their professor about it because later that day we went there with Italian and Spanish people from the project. It was a city, legend has it, built for a woman – Azahara, the favourite concubine of the Caliph.
Medina Alzahara was built from scratch, the largest in Western Europe and was described by travelers from all over the known world as ‘a dazzling series of palaces full of treasures never seen before’.
It was built on three terraces, surrounded by a city wall, with the Royal Castle situated on the highest and the middle levels. The lower level was reserved for living quarters and the Mosque, which was built outside the walls. Rich marbles of violet and red, gold and precious stones, as well as the skilled work of artisans from the best quarries and the now legendary Byzantine contributions, helped to make the palace take on its full glory. It was declared a UNESCO world heratige site on 1st July 2018. Before seeing the city itself we went to the museum where we watched a movie about the past of Medina Alzahara and then we took the bus to see the city.
