eTwinning for future teachers at the University of Zagreb

Ivana Milković, Associate Professor and the university's eTwinning coordinator, had some challenges early on, but student teachers soon began their own eTwinning projects, collaborating internationally. Some even chose to write their degree theses on eTwinning, marking an early sign of its potential to significantly enhance both personal and professional development.
Ivana took part in eTwinning courses and partner-finding fairs, and worked with experienced eTwinners. As a result, the projects at the faculty developed into successful collaborations with other initial teacher education institutions across Europe. The Faculty of Teacher Education began integrating eTwinning even more into their courses, connecting their student teachers with others through collaborative projects.
One particularly meaningful project involved student teachers supporting activities with nursery teachers and children from Petrinja, a town in central Croatia, who were working with partners from Greece and Romania. This project encouraged intercultural teamwork and helped with the local community’s recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic and a devastating earthquake.
eTwinning is now at the heart of the university's efforts to prepare future teachers for global challenges and experiences. By engaging in eTwinning projects, student teachers develop the skills they need to excel in intercultural communication, digital literacy and collaboration. Their involvement in eTwinning helps them become proactive teachers who bring innovation into their classrooms and communities.
In 2024, the Zagreb University Faculty of Teacher Education was given a European award for integrating eTwinning into its programmes, in recognition of their work integrating eTwinning into initial teacher training.
Participating in eTwinning is a journey that happens one step – and one shared project – at a time.
