March 1 is Baba Marta's Day!
On March 1, Bulgarians celebrate a centuries-old traditional holiday called Grandma March, associated with welcoming the coming spring. On this day and several days after, Bulgarians exchange and wear the so-called "martenitsi" - twisted red and white threads, symbolizing health and happiness, a talisman against evil spirits. Martniks are given as gifts to friends, relatives and colleagues and are worn on the wrist or on clothes.
