Practical approaches to support student-centered learning and differentiation in language education using technology.

The main aim of this course is to support participants in becoming even more effective and innovative language educators who are well-equipped to create engaging, differentiated, and technology-enhanced language lessons that cater to the unique needs of their students, fostering a dynamic and enriched learning environment.

Description

This course will familiarize language teachers with ways in which they can extend their repertoire of interventions and didactical procedures to address the variety in educational needs and interests of their students with ICT-supported methodologies.
To create common ground participants will first be introduced to general educational design principles such as the ADDIE model and approaches for differentiation and personalized learning in language education. Delegates will be invited and guided to reflect on their current teaching practices. Then, differentiation related knowledge and relevant skills will be developed by exploring a range of topics including assessing pre-knowledge and setting clear goals, methodologies and related digital tools relevant for specific curriculum aspects such as reading, writing and vocabulary development and adaptive classroom management.

By the end of this comprehensive course, participants will have acquired the knowledge, skills, and practical experience necessary to effectively support student-centered learning and differentiation in language education using technology.

Learning objectives

By the end of this course empowering language educatorson to develop language teaching practices using technology to meet the diverse needs of students, 

the participants will have a better understanding of:

 

  • the general principles for addressing differentiation and personalized learning
  • the Instructional design framework (ADDIE model)
  • defining clear learning goals
  • differentiating instruction to develop studets' receptive and productive language skills.
  • learner strategies for personalized learning such as the use of personal vocabulary files
  • personal strategies and resources for ongoing professional development.
     

and have enhanced their skills to: 

 

  • reflect on their current teaching practices and identify areas for improvement.
  • use techniques and tools for assessing pre-knowledge
  • analyze illustrative video reports and teaching materials.
  • use the ADI model to (re)design and develop a differentiated learning scenario-based lesson using a textbook topic.
  • critically analyse the added value of potentially useful software tools
  • design tasks and projects that promote student voice and choice in the learning process
  • apply scaffolding stragies

 

Methodology & assessment

Methodology
The course combines plenary, tutor-led introductions & viewing videos of exemplary classroom procedures with follow-up activities when participants do practical work individually, in pairs and small groups applying the concepts and principles presented by analyzing and discussing viewed practices, and/or practicing approaches involving specific technologies or applications.

Preparation
Delegates are advised to bring your subject book(s) and/or related digital materials (if available) to the course to be used when creating customised materials and activities.

Assessment
At the end of the week delegates will demo, discuss and assess the teaching & learning materials that they created during the hands-on sessions.

Personalised certificates will be made available for those participants who actively participated and successfully completed the various course activities and the final course product.
