1. Measurements  around 21 December.

2. Students can write a short story:
   Another year went by since Eratosthenes 2022 project started. The earth made a whole rotation around the sun and here we are again in the longest night of the year.
   What can the earth say about its journey in 2022? 
   Write a short story about it.

3. Posters, Presentations, Images, Scratch work, etc relevant to the solstice, which will be added in winter solstice page in the platform.

Deadline for activities 2 and 3: of course up to the end of December. Ideally up to 23/12/22.

The Earth’s journey in 2022 - Stories

Story 1 by Aigio team

Hello, I am the Earth and you all live on me.

Today is the longest night. We made together a whole rotation around the sun. How long did it last? You call that period “year” and you count years, decades, centuries, …. 2022 was one of these years.

My journey around the sun was a usual one. I saw a lot of stars and planets and talked a bit with them.

Looking on me and on you, what did I see?

I saw the Ukraine war. I cannot understand why you, crazy little people, destroy human life.

I noticed that you possibly managed to handle something very bad called Covid 19. I saw you walking in the streets and smiling, while in the previous years, you were all hidden at home and behind masks.

This year, I heard people talking about how expensive things are. Why are they expensive? Who controls that? I do not know. Why do you need all these “things”?

I cannot avoid storms and heavy rain and too high temperatures and climate change, although I am trying hard. Please hear my voice through the sea, the rivers, the forests, the mountains, the animals and everything that is not made by you. You depend on it.

Now, by the end of the year I saw you very excited, watching a small ball going here and there and some people were running after it. I didn’t understand why they did that, but I am happy when you are happy.

I care about you. In a few days, a new journey that you call 2023 starts (it never stops. You place time labels on it). Let’s do our best to make this journey happy. Please protect me, so that I can protect you.

Your Earth

Hello! I am the earth and I'd like to present to all human beings a basic and yet, highly respected amount of insight into my recent experience in this one-year journey around the sun. 

Nevertheless, I must say that this year's regular trip couldn't really be regarded as one of my favorite ones. First and foremost, as I was walking past the sun, I noticed an incongruous collusion between you people on a particular area of my surface that quite scared me off and drew me away. I firmly believe that this extreme violent behavior that you vain-hearted humans often choose to exhibit, is not right at all. Absolutely no one can disregard the fact that there is a definition of both right and wrong in this world you live in and hence, there is a blatant difference between those two fundamental words. Undoubtedly, an illuminating example of wrong is war. At the other end of the spectrum, however, right stands for peace and unity that you people often choose to avoid and never actually adopt in your everyday life. 

Additionally, among all those different fascinating sorts of things I observed during this year's journey, I concluded that some of you are also fond of entertaining yourselves by participating in a wide variety of activities that involve one ball or more, apart from ruining your relationships with one another, which undeniably has a rather positive impact on humankind. To illustrate my point, you are specifically benefited by sports as they are conducive to socialization, while they contribute to the elimination of oddly aggressive actions. 

Furthermore, I finally realized that what led to my devastation and contamination, is your own carelessness and lack of awareness about global warming and climate change: crucial matters that concern all of you. Apparently, despite this fact, in this day and age you don't care about me. You don't care about the planet. But I care about you. Therefore, you should become more sensitive towards me and gain environmental awareness by collaborating with each other in order to reduce pollution, so that the environment can be saved-so that I can be saved. 

Then, I guess we'll have a lot to catch up on next year, on the next winter solstice and consequently when I'll have eventually completed another whole rotation around the sun.
