Future Forward: empowering teachers for a changing world

In our ever-changing world, parents, caregivers, teachers and educators are faced with the challenge of preparing children for a future that is difficult to predict. To help this, in collaboration with TED-Ed, the European Commission has developed a course that provides insights into future thinking, anticipation and foresight, opening doors to better-informed and imaginative futures.

How can we equip ourselves with the tools and skills needed to navigate the unknown? This is where futures literacy comes into play. While no-one can truly predict the future, by integrating future thinking into education, we acquire tools to anticipate and navigate the complexities of an uncertain world – fostering innovation, adaptability and resilience in line with the goals of the European Year of Skills.

Future Forward is a 20-lesson course comprising five chapters that guide participants through the topics of perception of timefutures mindsetmultiple futures, investing in imaginations and taking action. Each lesson includes a video, a quiz, additional information/sources and an exchange opportunity with other participants.

The course nurtures a future mindset – examining our perception of time, challenging assumptions and imagining alternative futures. Through animations and videos (subtitled in various EU-languages), participants gain multiple perspectives on the pressing issues of this century, encouraging critical thinking and fostering imagination. They will be empowered to take an active role in creating a better tomorrow, transforming their ideas into tangible actions to shape our collective future.

By embracing future thinking, educators and teachers become catalysts for change, creating vibrant learning environments that foster critical thinking, collaboration and imagination. By igniting curiosity, nurturing future literacy and promoting collective engagement, teachers empower students to envision, imagine and co-create a better world, aligning with the goals of the European Year of Skills and fostering lifelong learning.
