Description

Global competence equips individuals with the knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes needed to thrive in an interconnected world. This interactive course covers topics such as culture, identity, communication, 21st-century skills, and the UN Sustainable Development Goals, alongside PISA’s framework for global competence. Participants will explore methods to integrate these concepts into their teaching, regardless of subject or age group, through discussions and collaborative activities. The course emphasizes experiential learning and adapts to participants’ needs, leveraging its international context to highlight diverse perspectives and solutions.

Learning objectives

As a participant, I will

  1. reflect on my own culture and identity, and on how I can help my students understand these concepts;
  2. relate to other cultures first-hand and deepen my intercultural understanding;
  3. develop awareness of how cultures / communication styles can clash, and what methods can help to deal with the arising conflict;
  4. understand the concept of global competence and start thinking of how to incorporate its development into my own teaching practice;
  5. be better equipped to help my students become globally competent;
  6. create a lesson plan/project plan relating to my own teaching context.

Methodology & assessment

This course employs a practical, interactive methodology to build global competence. Participants explore intercultural communication through activities like analyzing the cultural iceberg and reflecting on personal biases. Hands-on tasks include engaging with the PISA global competence framework, incorporating the UN Sustainable Development Goals into lessons, and creating tailored teaching materials. The course features a mix of discussions, collaborative brainstorming, and project-based learning, allowing participants to adapt strategies to their teaching context while reflecting on their week’s progress and future applications.
