English for Specific Purposes (ESP) is a language approach whose goal is to provide learners with narrowly defined goals the language elements they need to function as professionals. Five conceptions function as the foundations and basic principles of ESP. Authenticity, Research-base, Language/text, Need, and Learning / methodology. The key stages in ESP are needs analysis, course design, materials selection, teaching and learning, and evaluation. English for Specific Purposes (ESP) is a branch of English Language Teaching which in turn is divided into two main branches of English for Academic Purposes such as Medicine, Engineering, Theology, etc. and English for Occupational Purposes such as English for secretaries, technicians, etc. He states that there are three features common to ESP courses: a) authentic material, b) purpose-related orientation, and c) self-direction.
