Michalovce

1st description:

Our hometown Michalovce is located in the far east of Slovakia. So-called “Heart of Zemplín” lies in the middle of Zemplín - folklore region, roughly 8 km away from the shore of “Šírava” lake. The town is situated in the river floodplain of Laborec. Michalovce is guarded around by beautiful hills such as Vihorlat Mountains or Slanské Hills. All of that mentioned above make pleasant and perfect natural environment for this humble town. We may not be a big city, but our infrastructure and industrial production are quite well done and developed. That also resulted in Michalovce becoming the European City of Sports back in 2019. Tourism also takes place in Michalovce being a successful town. Michalovce is neither poor nor rich – residents live decent and peaceful life.

A little fun-facts, Michalovce has the most traffic roundabouts in Slovakia and has the most teams in the highest leagues from different sports.

Slovakia is a small country in the Central Europe. The population is about 5 million. The capital is Bratislava. In the past it was three-language town, because there were spoken Slovak Hungarian and Austrian. Today it’s a city, where young people often move because of job or university. It’s close to Vienna- the capital of Austria, about one hour by the car. We have a lot of historical monuments and beautiful nature. Our biggest castle is Spis castle and it’s also written in the World Heritage Site UNESCO. We have 9 national parks. Our national food are potatoe dumplings with sheep cheese and bacon. We are from Michalovce. It’s a small town located on the east of Slovakia in the middle of region Zemplín, that’s why they are called heart of Zemplín. We attend the Secondary Grammar School called Gymnazium of Ľudovít Štúr. It’s general high school but this year  it had opened first bilingual class. We always have some competitions and activities there. For example last week we baked gingerbreads in the canteen. Michalovce and slovan folkore:

The city is located on the shore of Lake Sirava approximately 360 kilometers from the capital Bratislava. Michalovce are located in Kosšický kraj. Slovak historians claim that Slavs arrived in the area in the fifth century, first being a part of the empire of the Avars. Although there is no evidence, Slovak historians claim that the area was part of the Great Moravian empire in the ninth century. It is probably unlikely. The town of Michalovce is the place where the legendary Prince Laborec died and was buried according to legends. On Michalovce´s crest are two pigeons, symbolizing freedom that the city had gained. Later an anthem was composed to celebrate the city's founding. People really like sports in Michalovce especially ice-hokey. Fun fact Jožko Vajda once visited Michalovce. There are many people in Michalovce most of which are Christian, but other religions were and are practiced in Michalovce  we also had a Jewish singagog which has fallen to ruin.

In the past pagan slavs lived in Slovakia and some of their traditions were passed down including folklore dances and dresses that are very popular in Michalovce. Pagan slavs were polytheistic which means they believed in many gods as: Perun the god of lightning as well as war, he's often considered as the king of gods.

Morena the goddes of winter and death, she was disliked by the slavs so much that they had rituals known as "Burning the Morena"

Veles is a god of many functions, which makes it difficult to compare him to any othe diety. He is attributed with being a chthonic god: He ruled over the underworld

Dazhbog the god of sung his name means "god of giving" may suggest that he was also a god of abundance.

Dola the personification of fate and destiny. Dola was assigned to a person at birth and stayed with then until their death. She can be compared to the sisters of fate in greek mythology or the Norns in norse mythology.

Svarog is the god of creation. He created everything. He reigned over every aspect of creation even the spirits of the dead. Svarog presided over the skies and eigned over all slavic dieties.

The difference between Svarog and Perun is that Perun ruled over the physical realm and Svarog ruled over the prav. Svarog is the god of gods while perun is the king of gods.
