1.5 Degree: Together possible

The short description

In the future, today's children and young people will face individual and societal challenges caused by climate change throughout their lives. Climate change is a real threat to our entire civilization, the effects of which we can already see and which will lead to irreversible disasters if action is not taken. Failure to tackle climate change is seen as the biggest obstacle to achieving sustainable development goals. The actions people take today will determine what kind of future the world and humanity will face tomorrow. This is why education must be provided around the world to ensure that individuals understand the impact of global warming and that young people, in particular, take action. Today's youth and children will be experiencing the negative and inevitable effects of climate change, which is recognized as the biggest threat to sustainable development, in the coming years. At this point, education is a critical factor for combating climate change and sustainable development.

The Aim of the project

This project aims the followings;

1- Raise awareness and create awareness within the scope of the 12th sustainable development goal "Responsible Production and Consumption" and the 13th goal "Climate Action",

2- Increase high school students' perceptions and awareness of climate change and its consequences,

3- Strengthen young people's ability to take action and adapt,

4- Prepare the future leaders of our society for the social, economic and ecological challenges of the 21st century,

5- Gain responsible consumption habits and raise awareness about sustainable environment and communities.

Project Method

A project based method will be adopted in this project. Students will discover the climate change themselves and in group / peer works. All tasks in the project are student oriented and involve 21st century skills such as communication, cooperation, creative thinking, critical thinking and ICT use. The students are expected to produce individual and joint outcomes throughout the project and also they will present their works to their project partners, their school friends/teachers, parents etc. This project is also action research. Action research is an active, participatory, democratic research methodology that aims for change and transformation. It is based on a 'co-developing and co-creating' approach for a desired future that serves the common good of all stakeholders involved in the process. Climate change, which is not only a local but also a global problem, is a common problem of all young people in the world and this problem can cause mental problems such as anxiety, depression and anxiety, especially in young people. Recognizing this problem, we, as teachers, aimed to help them cope with their anxiety by using innovative teaching methods and to actively combat climate change.

The effect of the project will be evaluated with a pretest and posttest which will be applied at the beginning and at the end of the project. Scales to be used: “Climate Literacy Scale developed by Alina Kuthe and “Ecological footprint Awareness Scale” developed by Tekindal and friends.

Expected Project Results

At the end of the project, we expect the following results;

1- Students will have knowledge about “Climate Action” and “Responsible Production and Consumption” sustainable development goals

2- Students will have high awareness of climate change and its consequences,

3- Students will improve their climate change literacy,

4- Students will acquire environmental friendly lifestyles and learn how to reduce their ecological footprints,
