Supporting teacher professional development using SELFIEforTEACHERS and DigCompEdu on the European School Education Platform

The European School Education Platform is committed to supporting teachers in their professional development and providing them with the resources they need to succeed. In this context, the platform will make increasing use of the European Framework for the Digital Competence of Educators (DigCompEdu) and its associated self-reflection tool, SELFIEforTEACHERS, as part of the resources and professional development activities available to teachers.
SELFIE and DigCompEdu

What is DigCompEdu?

DigCompEdu is a framework that supports the development of educators’ digital competencies in Europe. The framework includes 22 competencies that are grouped into six areas, e.g. assessment or teaching. It is relevant for educators at all levels from early childhood to higher and adult education, including general and vocational education and training, special needs education, and non-formal learning contexts.

What is SELFIEforTEACHERS?

SELFIEforTEACHERS is an online self-assessment tool for reviewing educators' digital competence and getting feedback on the use of digital tools and technologies in their work. The tool, which can be used by primary and secondary teachers, was developed based on DigCompEdu and consists of 32 competencies grouped into six areas. Teachers answer a series of statements on how they use digital technologies. They then receive a tailor-made feedback report that provides them with an overview of their current digital skill-level and identifies areas where they could improve

What is the added value?

By using SELFIEforTEACHERS, teachers can identify the strengths and areas where they can further improve their digital competencies. In 2023, the European School Education Platform will start to link its professional development activities and materials with the competencies set out in the tool. This will help teachers find relevant resources for their needs. In due time, the certificates of completion awarded in the professional development activities will also indicate which competencies were demonstrated by the teachers who completed the activities.
