Inclusive Teaching: Wellbeing, Emotional intelligence and Class Management

The course is focused on class management as essential for creating a positive, inclusive, and supportive learning environment. Starting from the idea that teaching is an emotional practice, the course explains the importance of creating a sense of belonging in the class and in the school, as the key to develop harmony and to create a “class culture”.

Description

This is the main aspect in creating inclusive environments, where everybody feels welcomed and valued. It will be developed around five social-emotional core competencies, each having “positive habits of mind”, that are essential skills for the development of the pupil into an equilibrated adult. The participants will experience practical exercises aimed to develop in children: confidence, persistence, organization, cooperation and resilience. Debriefing will take place, facilitating adaptations of the activities to specific class situations and pupils typologies. The tools used in
organizing the activities are non-formal, consisting in games, dances, board games, brain fitness activities and mindfulness activities.

Learning objectives

The main objectives of this program are:
• Find out what is a good class management
• Understand teaching as being an emotional practice
• Find out the characteristics of five core social-emotional competencies
• Understand the key words: emotional intelligence, awareness, mindfulness, wellbeing
• Experience practical activities aimed to develop positive habitsof mind in pupils for: confidence, persistence, organization, cooperation and resilience
• Introspection and connection of the activities with own personal development needs
• Create an activity for the class

Methodology & assessment

The program of the course is designed interactively, along with
discussions and individual and team exercises. There will be a day
allocated to each core competence: confidence, persistence,
organization, cooperation and resilience. All the practical activities
experienced will be followed by debriefing and explanations
regarding what they develop, their importance in the participants’
own personal development and the importance for the pupils’
development. Every time, adaptations and variations will be
offered. Also, there will be explained the way the activities can be
used as routines done during the whole school year, no matter the
subject taught or the moment of the day. The participants also
receive material related to: description of each activity, video
tutorials, specific links or bibliography. At the end they will have a
toolkit to be used in creating good routines in class. As a final task,
