The earth has been utterly destroyed. Some survivors take on a mission: to create their own fictitious world with its own cultural identity through common laws, a flag, an anthem and the election of their mayor. Through this global simulation, pupils interact in order to introduce themselves, describe their environment, organize their village and prepare a major party in a task-centred approach.

Objectives
Objectives

• Practice discussion, research, and group work techniques through in-class and distance learning practice, while spurring learners ’imagination and using highly innovative ICT tools • Give a greater exposure to another language to increase learners’ motivation and interest in a foreign language • Analysis of the learning processes through the development of cognitive strategies with a view of making learners more autonomous • Development of intercultural skills to discover some of the customs of other countries • Education for citizenship: pupils learn to live together while building a new world This project is in compliance with official language directives, shows clear identification of skills and may be fully integrated in curriculum: no extra work for the learners. It does however require precise planning of tasks with fixed deadlines. This involves regular meetings among the teachers to plan the tasks, decide upon the methods to be employed and choose ICT tools

Collaboration

This project consisted of five tasks. Under each task a number of activities are proposed. You may choose to do all or some of the activities and all may be integrated to regular classes. Step 1: Preparatory tasks In preparation you may use any relevant documents from your textbooks or the Web. With the pupils: collective read the micro-activities for each task (detailed below). Give explanations of objectives with list of skills and knowledge required (I need to be able to …) during brainstorming sessions. Work in groups of four and appoint a language and ICT “expert” in each group. Step 2. The outline of tasks:Task 1: the survivors leave the earth: article relates disaster Working in their groups the pupils are given the following task situation. You are a journalist who works for a famous newspaper. Give it a name of your choice. Using the information on the initial situation, write a short article describing what happened, how you escaped and how you discovered the rainbow village. Be creative! Give a title to your article. The groups then upload their stories to the TwinSpace and each class votes on their favourites. • Task 2: the survivors arrive in the village: country ID cards + stereotypes - Activity 1: in groups Breaks the class into groups. Each group prepares three questions on their country. The class then chooses which questions to use in the quiz • Post these questions on the TwinSpace • Each partner then answers each others' questions. This can be done live in a video link if you wish or just answer on live - Activity 2: in groups • Using PPT or some other tool, to prepare an identity card for your country that includes the following information: 1) number of inhabitants, 2) capital city, 3) main cities (four or five), 4) major dates (maximum of five), 5) famous places (three or four), 6) famous people (maximum of five). • Display only five out of the six criteria. Leave one criterion uncompleted. - Activity 3 : in groups Read your correspondents' identity card. Question your correspondents to complete the missing information. (can be done live by video link or by answering questions in TwinSpace forum) - Activity 4: in groups Vote for the best identity card and justify your answer. • Task 3 the survivors enter into the village: self-introduction (oral and written), presentation of schools -Activity 1: • the pupils write a text to talk about themselves (first name, surname, date of birth, place of birth, brothers and sisters, country/hometown, physical description, hobbies/likes/dislikes, personality, • the teacher collects all the pupils’ documents in a Rainbow Village Golden Book -Activity 2: The pupils update their TwinSpace profile using their presentation for activity 1. they can add a picture or drawing to represent them, if they wish. Activity 3: • The teacher gives their class a list of all the young people in the projects that their pupils can work with, • The pupils choose one potential friend among this list, • They then draw their new friend's portrait based on his/her TwinSpace profile. Activity 4: • using their profile, the pupils introduce themselves orally on a Voki but do not give their name. They end their presentation with "who am I?", • They post their Voki in the TwinSpace blog, • Each pupil then chooses one profile on the Voki, and try to guess who is talking. Activity 5: • The pupils create one new character/avatar with new identity, • each pupil publishes their new avatars in TwinSpace Task 4 The survivors settle in the village: tourist guide, constitution book, candidates programme, election of mayor. You can choose to do either activity 1 or activity 2 or both. -Activity 1 In groups, the pupils manufacture a project scrap book, “The Rainbow Village scrap book” (there is here the possibility of cooperation with art teacher.) -Activity 2 In groups, design also a virtual scrap book. See above. Potential cooperation with ICT teacher. -Activity 3 Manufacture a model of the Rainbow Village - Let each pupil choose their own job in this task • Design the village map as follows. In their groups the pupils - draw a map of their village with its streets, - give names to the village streets, - select official and government buildings, - place these buildings and shops on the map • Manufacturing a model of the Rainbow Village: this village should be environment-friendly. The teachers can choose their own solutions to approach this depending on their pupils' age and the ICT tools available at their schools. Potential cooperation with science/biology teacher and the art teacher. • The pupils vote for the best model • Each country writes a leaflet for the tourist information board of his Rainbow Village including pictures of the model and a short description of buildings (including size, colour, material, number of floors ...). • The leaflet is posted on the Rainbow Village Log Book -Activity 4 Electing the mayor of the Rainbow Village: • Each country proposes five rules for selecting and voting for the candidates. These rules are then discussed with the other groups and five rules common to the village are chosen. These rules are gathered in the Rainbow Village Constitution Book (an e-book). • The pupils take up their new characters/avatars identities (task 3). • Each group chooses a pupil interested in becoming mayor and helps them to draw up a programme for the future of the village with five proposals. These are drafted and presented on bill/poster • These bill/posters are gathered in the Rainbow Village Constitution Book • Each avatar-candidate (with the help of his group) orally presents his/her programme. • Within each country, the pupils vote. The results are collected by the teacher and the mayor is appointed. • Task 5 The survivors organize a party with music and dishes, selection of flags, writing of anthem -Activity 1 Now that the mayor is elected, it is time to write the Rainbow Village anthem. (possibility to involve the Music teacher) • Each class writes a stanza (four lines) for our Rainbow Village anthem. Once it has been written, sing it and record it • Upload your anthem to the TwinSpace and create a background story for the anthem. Add a link to listen to the anthem together with its background story • Take a vote as to which anthem will be adopted as the official anthem - Activity 2 Your village now needs a new flag and emblem • In class study the symbolism of colours in flags and icons in emblems • Get each group to make a "virtual flag" with the help of a blank flag model and draw the emblem of the Rainbow Village • Have a vote for the best flag and emblem - Activity 3 Organise a cultural event. • Each country creates a dessert recipe (maximum of two). • All recipes are collected in a recipe book (an e-book with photos, if possible) • Choose a dessert from another country, prepare it and taste it while sharing your impressions with your partners. -Activity 4 Prepare " The dictionary of the Rainbow Village friends" - Select a maximum of 20 words to be translated in all partner languages - create short videos where you will pronounce the Foreign Language word, and then translate the word in your mother tongue. Activity 5 Organize a "surprise" for your partners: for example post a video on twinspace, send a card to your country partners as a token of their mutual friendship

Evaluation & Assessment
Evaluation & Assessment

• Pupils can vote for the best productions at the end of each task. The best works selected are published in the “Hall of Fame” section. • Pupils and Teachers can comment on each others’ work. • At the end of the project: - pupils and teachers sign the guestbook and share their ideas and thoughts about the project. - pupils can fill in a questionnaire about the activities they enjoyed the most, while working on the project. - Teachers document and reflect on the project using the project journal.

Open up a blog so that parents, teachers and other pupils can have a look at the children’s work. Possible explore the possibility of interaction in a ‘Second Life’ environment or any other 3D world simulation available. Think of new projects based on the main idea of the Rainbow Village, like building the ideal School of the Village, for example.
