How to get more young people to choose vocational education and training (VET) pathways has long been an emphasis in educational policy in Europe. Iceland is no exception as most student entering upper secondary schools choose academic pathways over vocational pathways despite concentrated efforts to increase VET participation. In the webinar we discussed the standing of vocational education and what the rationale of young people selecting their upper secondary school pathway indicates about the perception of VET using research results from Iceland.

About the speakers

Elsa Eiríksdóttir

Elsa Eiríksdóttir (elsae@hi.is) is a professor at the University of Iceland, School of Education. She completed a BA degree in psychology from the University of Iceland in 1999, and a master’s and a PhD degree in engineering psychology from Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta in 2007 and 2011, respectively. Her research interests focus on vocational education and training, upper secondary education, skill acquisition, learning, and transfer of training.
