Description

This course gives teachers a framework for supporting students in developing, through English, the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to achieve a sustainable and green future. Using ATC’s project-based learning course for Secondary students (Green Voices) as a model project, teachers work through project tasks and processes, discussing teaching techniques and resources, and reflecting on how they might be adapted to suit their students and their teaching context. Exploring elements of good project design, teachers are supported to develop their own projects. Choosing a sustainability initiative, teachers write driving questions, develop project goals and create an action plan. They learn how to develop a digital project wall to organise project work, and how to create engaging podcasts.

Course Modules:

PBL for Sustainability

The Green Voices Project

Planning a Project (From Idea to Output)

Teaching Research Skills

Language Support in PBL

Learning objectives

Help teachers:

  • Use an enquiry-based approach to explore the challenging issues facing us today and develop students' understanding of sustainable development goals and initiatives.
  • Create authentic projects that connect to students’ interests and identities and help them explore how they might make a difference towards a more sustainable and green future.
  • Organise and manage projects using digital ‘Project Walls’.
  • Use differentiated teaching techniques to meet the individual needs of students.
  • Support students in the development of their language around themes of sustainability, helping them to communicate with confidence, through English, about their ideas and initiatives.
  • Encourage reflection on work and reflection on learning, helping to develop students’ critical thinking skills and independent learning strategies.
  • Use podcasting tools, to help students develop engaging and meaningful final project ‘products’, where they use their ‘Green Voices’ to share their project ideas with others.

Methodology & assessment

The course combines course input from ATC’s trainers with group discussion and collaborative work. Teachers work in a cross-cultural learning environment to share experiences and best practice with colleagues from across the EU. The course is hands-on and practical and teachers are supported to develop their own sustainability project. They learn how to create digital project walls to organize and manage their projects and log their work; and how to create fun and engaging podcasts to present their project ideas and initiatives to others.
On the final day of the course participants present their project idea to their peers receiving peer- and instructor-feedback on its benefits and ways to differentiate and adapt it. A library of resource material related to each module is available to participants on ATC’s Platform for Teachers, ATC Connect.
