Stress Management: Enhancing Teachers' and Students' Well-Being
This course is designed to equip teachers with practical strategies to manage stress effectively and promote overall well-being.
The course has been designed to help educators to cope with stress that affects them harmfully and help their students do the same - with effective coping mechanisms that foster a supportive school environment.
Description
Negative stress (distress) is a widespread issue among teachers and students, affecting their work and learning abilities. It is the kind of stress we experience when we feel under threat, out of control or stretched beyond our limits. Whereas, eustress or positive stress, can serve as a motivational force that enhances focus and performance, providing a healthy challenge, energy and promoting growth.
Unfortunately, many teachers do not know how to utilize the force of eustress on the one hand, and on the other hand, how to regulate the negative stress on a daily basis.
Participants will recognize the unique stressors their teaching profession is faced with and delve into evidence-based approaches and resources, in order to prevent burnout, and enhance their resilience.
It aims to show participants how to recognize the pattern of stress, learn how to self regulate and help heir students to do the same, with relational regulation and suggested activites.
Participants will understand how to use different approaches and methods in managing stress, such as mindfuless, relaxation and breathing combined with specific movement activities.
- Day 1: Welcome session, introductions, ice breakers and energisers; Cultural introductions; Introduction to stress response system, course overview/Afternoon: Cultural activity: Walking tour in Split historic centre
- Day 2: Educators' competences - understanding the patterns of stress, learning the methods of self-regulation and effective relational regulation
- Day 3: Educators' skills, understanding the window of tolerance, hypo or hyper arousal
- Day 4: Practising effective stress coping methods and strategies
- Day 5: Course evaluation session with individual and group reflections
Learning objectives
- Understanding the impact of stress response system on the mental and physical well-being
- Understanding what stressors and stress response system are - effects of stress on the brain and behaviour of students under stress.
- Learning how mindfulness and relaxation techniques can increase awareness and reduce stress
- Acquiring strategies for effective time management and effective and assertive communication skills
- Gaining knowledge of simple stress-reducing exercises that can be done during the breaks and taught to students in the classrooms
- Understanding the significance of assertiveness and self-care practices
- Acquiring techinques and methods that minimize stress for both teachers and students (stress and anxiety reducing practices)
Activities and methods are intended to teach both teachers and students to recognize their stress arousal level, learn how to maintain its optimal level, and benefit from the eustress.
Methodology & assessment
The training course employs a learner-centered approach, blending theoretical knowledge with hands-on activities. The program will also integrate mindfulness and relaxation techniques to provide teachers with practical experience in managing stress in real-time. By the end of the course, participants will be equipped with a comprehensive set of stress management tools, empowering them to create a positive and thriving learning environment, benefiting both teachers and students alike. Facilitators will guide teachers in developing personalized stress management action plans and provide ongoing support and feedback throughout the course.
