This course delivers essential tips for preparing and delivering engaging and effective lectures. Participants examine different lecturing styles and consider how to structure a lecture to maximise engagement. Topics covered include the importance of signposting and pacing, using engaging visual aids and how to employ nonverbal communication.
Description
This course provides a professional development opportunity for participants focusing on strategies for lecturing successfully through the medium of English. Through various activities, participants are invited to share knowledge and skills acquired with their colleagues. The opportunity to experience new cultural contexts and network with international colleagues is an added positive outcome.
Learning objectives
- Exploring different lecturing styles: reading, conversational, rhetorical
- Structuring lectures: introductions, key points, and conclusions
- Finding the right register: formal, informal, consultative
- Signposting key points and important concepts
- Using visual aids and non-verbal communication to convey information
- Adapting the principles of CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) to aid with lecturing in English to international learners
- Practising essential academic grammar: conjunctions, conditionals, interrogative phrasing
Methodology & assessment
The Course Objectives are agreed and Goals identified with each group on Day One of the course
A Task-Based, Active Learning Methodology is applied featuring self-study tasks, group tasks, individual classroom-based tasks and peer interviews.
On the final day of the course, participants present their learning and next steps and receive peer and trainer feedback and assessment.
Materials, digital tools & other learning resources
The course materials are all digital and are provided through a Learning Management System, accessible via smartphone, tablet or laptop. A link to digital course materials is provided and each class will have their own platform to access or review when the course concludes. Participants are required to use digital tools to create interactive posts, give presentations, and complete tasks. Links to other learning resources for further reading are also provided on the Course Platform.
