Interdisciplinary Learning: Teaching without Borders

Interdisciplinary Learning is all about going above and beyond the usual boundaries we place on students' learning. In this experiential, project-focused course we will explore the interconnection of different areas of education, the ways in which we can bring subjects and disciplines together, and how we can build transformative interdisciplinary learning experiences for our students.

Description

This workshop will introduce teachers and educators to the principles and practices of interdisciplinary teaching and learning. Interdisciplinary teaching is an approach to education that combines knowledge and skills from multiple disciplines to help students develop a deeper understanding of the world around them. It is a particularly effective way to prepare students for the challenges of the 21st century, which increasingly require them to be able to think critically and solve problems in complex and interconnected ways.

In this workshop, participants will learn about the benefits of interdisciplinary teaching, how to design and implement interdisciplinary lessons and units, and how to assess student learning in interdisciplinary contexts. Participants will also have the opportunity to network with other teachers and educators who are interested in interdisciplinary teaching and learning.

Working collaboratively with other educators, this course will help you:

  • Learn how to design and develop interdisciplinary teaching content.

  • Work with colleagues to collaborate on interdisciplinary learning experiences.

  • Assess student learning through interdisciplinary projects.

  • Identify resources and sources of inspiration for interdisciplinary learning.

Learning objectives

  • Understanding interdisciplinary learning and different forms of interdisciplinarity - transdisciplinary, intradisciplinary, non-disciplinary etc.

  • Learning how to plan, prepare, and design effective interdisciplinary learning experiences.

  • Learning how to integrate interdisciplinary learning into the wider curriculum.

  • Developing approaches to working and collaborating with peers, colleagues, other teachers, and outside experts.

  • Exploring techniques and methods for assessing student progress and development in interdisciplinary contexts.

By the end of the course, participants will have the skills, knowledge, and confidence to design and run interdisciplinary learning experiences in their own educational context.

Methodology & assessment

The methodology used in the workshop is a combination of hands-on activities, group discussions, and case studies. The workshop is designed to be interactive and engaging, and participants will have the opportunity to fully explore the interdisciplinary learning process firsthand.

The workshop will involve:
- design thinking
- group work
- project work
- individual work
- experiential learning
- creative learning activities
- design sprints
- problem-solving
- critical thinking
- reflective exercises

Throughout the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to reflect on what they are learning and to share their insights with others. This will help them to solidify their learning and develop a deeper understanding of interdisciplinary teaching and learning.

Assessment will be based on peer, group, and individual reflective practices supported by feedback, guidance, and commentary from the workshop facilitators. There will be no formal assessment process.

The overall goal of the workshop is to help teachers and educators develop the skills and knowledge they need to design and develop interdisciplinary learning experiences in their own educational contexts.

Certification details

At the end of the course, each participant will receive a certificate of attendance that documents their learning and certifies their participation. These certificates are issued on behalf of SWUX and are signed by the course leader or facilitator.

If requested, a Europass Mobility Certificate can also be issued.

All of our certificates meet Erasmus Quality Standards and include the course title, date, and location, a description of the course, its learning outcomes, and the course leader or facilitator.

Any additional documentation required by schools or education organisations can be supplied upon request, and we work hard to ensure that participants and organisations are supported throughout the certification and validation process.
