Experience a journey into the world of humanistic contextual education (HEC) and learn about the potential of using art and culture to provide attractive and engaging lessons that integrate knowledge across subjects and develop creativity and digital skills.
Description
This course supports elementary and secondary teachers as well as non-formal educators, equipping them with practical solutions and resources to teach through contexts tied to contemporary social issues. Through cultural activities and multisensory workshops, participants will explore art with local culture to create engaging experiences. A unique photovoice workshop introduces the potential of street art in education. By course end, participants gain innovative methods for integrating Humanistic Contextual Education (HCE) into humanities teaching, with ready-to-use lesson plans, worksheets, and mental games for student engagement. Implementing HCE enables students to develop key competences like civic competence and cultural awareness, discuss social challenges, enhance creativity, and understand the universal relevance of art. These approaches build an appreciation of cultural contexts, fostering active societal participation and community.
Learning objectives
- Participants will learn to implement Humanistic Contextual Education (HCE) by:
- Understanding the benefits of integrating humanities content to enhance education.
- Developing teaching tools inspired by HCE.
- Designing, testing, and adapting activities based on students’ needs.
- Mental Games: Participants will create interdisciplinary mental games using multimedia, urban culture, and online resources to build students’ social skills and creative thinking.
- Photovoice: Educators will implement this innovative method, using photography for student expression, reflection, and community engagement.
- Community Building: Educators will create a supportive community to share ideas and use photovoice as a tool for diagnosing school community challenges, fostering student empowerment.
- Upon completion, participants will gain tools for impactful, context-based humanities teaching.
Methodology & assessment
Every participant needs to complete the Needs Analysis before taking the course.
Course learnings can be used by educators, parents and guardians’ associations as well as any artistic, cultural, environmental or research group active with children and school communities.
Target group: primary teachers, secondary teachers, adult education providers, head teachers, deputy heads, future head teachers, trainers, councilors, librarians, researchers, NGO workers, volunteers in the education sector, as well as university professors and lecturers.
Materials, digital tools & other learning resources
Resources include lesson plans, worksheets, photovoice guides, mental game templates, digital art tools, and multimedia content. Online tools like digital whiteboards and collaborative platforms support interactive learning, with multimedia and urban culture resources enhancing engagement.

Course package content:
The total cost of the seven-day course is €560 (€80 per day). This includes:

Cancellation & changes:
Cancellations must be communicated via Mail (courses@spatiateacheracademy.eu).
Enrolled students who cannot take part in the course for any reasons can always be replaced by another participant from the same organization, free of charge.
If students cancel at least 3 months before the beginning of the course(s), SPATIA will refund the entire amount.
In case of force majeure the Foundation will offer the possibility to change dates and course to students free of charge.
