Inclusive Traditional Games and Sports for Outdoor & Beach (Larnaka - Cyprus)
Inclusion can be defined as the practice or policy of providing equal access to opportunities and resources for people who might otherwise be excluded or marginalised, such as those who have physical or intellectual disabilities, members of minority groups or people of a different gender or skin colour.
Description
As educators, it's vital to promote inclusivity and diversity both inside and outside the classroom. One effective approach is the use of outdoor traditional games and sports, which scholars recommend as tools to combat discrimination. These activities promote physical movement, teamwork, problem-solving, and connection with nature and community. Physical education teachers—and others—will learn the rules, practice the games, and later introduce them to their students. The selected games are simple, require minimal equipment, and are easily adaptable to various settings—indoors, outdoors, or even at the beach. Their inclusive nature and broad appeal make them ideal for frequent use, not just during special events. This course also offers exposure to traditional games from different European countries, giving teachers a rich set of tools to engage their students.
Learning objectives
One of the most significant aims of this course is to promote inclusivity and equality, to break down traditional stereotypes and provide a safe and supportive environment for all students to participate in an environment that fosters important values such as respect, acceptance, fairness, and cooperation. As teachers we can provide opportunities for our students to explore new activities and interests, which can contribute to their overall well-being and happiness.
We also aim to demonstrate inclusive outdoor sports and games that are unknown to most educators. By practising these sports/games, educators can experience the difficulties students may face by playing them and thus, realise the necessity of inclusive sports and games in their teaching routine. The goal is to create a classroom that is welcoming, supportive, and empowering for all students no matter their physical appearance (skin, age, race, disability, gender...)
