At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, Vienna was a hub of artistic activity, attracting some of the most influential artists, architects, and designers of the time. The city's unique blend of cultural traditions, intellectual curiosity, and avant-garde experimentation made it a fertile ground for artistic innovation. The art movement known as Modernism rejected traditional forms and focused on innovation and experimentation and encompassed a wide range of art forms, including literature, visual art, architecture, and music. Its disruption led to the birth of a new artistic experience in Vienna influenced by the French Art Nouveau. Would you like to explore these masterworks of Modernist and Art Nouveautraditions in Vienna? Nowadays, it is possible to notice traces of the Viennese Art Nouveau style in the architecture of Otto Wagner and in Gustav Klimt’s and Egon Schiele’s paintings displayed in museums such as the Albertina, the Österreichische Galerie Belvedere, the Leopold, and many others. Participants will take a deep dive into the rich artistic history of Vienna, and explore the two artistic movements that shaped its cultural landscape, i.e., Modernism and Art Nouveau. The course will provide visits to cultural sites such as Belvedere and Leopold Museum. Furthermore, a city tour will be organized to discover the most important Art Nouveau palaces.
