Empowering teachers and learners with self-regulated learning

Have you ever found yourself repeating the same instructions to your students—only to watch them still hesitate or rely on guesswork?

Do some of them seem to wait passively for step-by-step guidance, while others charge ahead and thrive on challenges?

If these scenarios resonate with you, you're not alone!

Description

This is precisely where Self-Regulated Learning (SRL) comes in. Rather than passively absorbing content, self-regulated learners plan their approach to tasks, set relevant goals, monitor their progress, and reflect on their successes and setbacks.

Best of all, SRL can be cultivated in every classroom—so no student’s opportunities depend on luck or on encountering the “right teacher.”

That’s why dr. Jeltsen Peeters—an academic expert and researcher in SRL—has joined forces with the Invento school district—known for its school-wide implementation of SRL.

Together, we offer a unique partnership that bridges the latest research insights with large-scale, on-the-ground practice.

Please read our Course Flyer for a longer description of the course.

You can pre-register here. Once we have enough participants, we’ll contact you again to confirm the course.

In the meantime, check out our course organizers At The Heart Of Learning and INVENTO School District.

Learning objectives

After this course, participants will:

  • Understand and apply SRL: Deepen their knowledge of self-regulated learning principles and apply evidence-based techniques to help students become proactive, strategic learners.
  • Enhance teaching practices: Integrate SRL strategies into daily lesson plans and adapt instruction to foster deeper student engagement and motivation.
  • Strengthen school-wide implementation: Discover how to build and sustain communities of practice among teachers, ensuring that SRL flourishes consistently across grade levels and subject areas.
  • Engage stakeholders: Gain insights into how policymakers, school leaders, and teachers can collaborate to make SRL a shared priority and give every student equal opportunity to thrive.

Methodology & assessment

Draft program

Please consider this to be a blueprint. We’ll finalize the program in case of a sufficient number of enrollments.

Day 1: Introducing 'self-regulated learning': What skills do students need?
Day 2: How can we effectively teach SRL strategies (part 1)? + Classroom visits
Day 3: How can we effectively teach SRL strategies (part 2) + Interaction with Invento teachers
Day 4: How to tackle lack of motivation in students? + School-wide SRL implementation + thematic SRL groups (e.g. SRL and communities of practice; SRL and AI; SRL and languages…)
Day 5: Case-based learning + SRL implementation plans + Visit to the Westmalle Trappist Brewery Shop

Indicative social activities: Visit of Antwerp, visit of the Westmalle Trappist Café and Shop, …

Methodology
The course consists of a variety of methods that suit the course objectives. Methods cover lectures, hands-on-workshops, classroom observations, discussion, co-design sessions, speed consulting sessions, open space method, etc.

Materials, digital tools & other learning resources

Course materials consist of presentations, which will be provided in a digital format.

Participants will also be equipped with a repository of resources to continue learning long after the course. Finally, the course will contain practical templates and instruments that will guide them to, for instance, observe SRL practices during classroom visits.

Certification details

Participants who attended at least 80% of the course will receive a certificate signed by the course organizer detailing the number of hours  and course objectives covered.
