Educational robots for inclusive skills development using the RIDE method

The aim of the experience-based training is to introduce the potential of the RIDE (Robotics for the Inclusive Development of Atypical and Typical Children) method and to prepare teachers to use it.
The RIDE method, which is expanding across Europe, combines the concepts of inclusive pedagogy, the use of educational robots and digital storytelling.

Description

The RIDE method has been developed by professionals from 6 countries, initiated and coordinated by the Abacusan Studio, with the support of the Erasmus+ programme.

The method is based on the project method, robotics and digital storytelling: children work on parts of literary works. They bring the characters of the text to life by building and programming robot characters, bringing the scenes to life in a "digital puppet theatre".

The RIDE method creates a pedagogical environment in which children with different learning needs work in mixed groups, while receiving personalised development through individual learning pathways. This is made possible by the division of labour within the group and the differentiation tasks.

The support of individual development embedded in the project process concerns text comprehension, fine motor skills, spatial orientation, attention concentration, algorithmic thinking, social and life skills, language awareness and communication, but can also serve talent

Learning objectives

The aim of the training is to prepare participants to apply the RIDE methodology in their daily teaching practice, which is an excellent way for the teacher to differentiate the same curriculum in an integrated classroom, at the same time, in the same place, according to the developmental needs of each child, without the involvement of another person.

Participants of the training

  • Learn about the practicalities of inclusive education
  • Learn how to build and program ArTeC robots
  • Learn in detail about the RIDE methodology, the use of student worksheets and teacher guides
  • Learn about the development needs and opportunities addressed by the RIDE method
  • Learn or deepen their understanding of the potential of project-based learning, with a focus on the development of soft skills
  • Learn how to create their own learning materials based on the RIDE method
  • Gain experience in the implementation and use of RIDE modules in schools
  • Learn about the international experience of using the RIDE method
  • Join the intern

Methodology & assessment

Experience-based training, conducted by the experts of Abacusan Studio - the developers of the method, experienced trainers.
The method can be used by teachers of any subject such as teachers of class 1-4, language, literature, history, science, library or museum - in addition to IT/digital culture teachers and development teachers.
No prior knowledge of robotics or programming is a prerequisite for the training. The training builds participants' knowledge from the basics of inclusion and robot programming to the application of the RIDE method through a series of practical exercises and interactive lectures.
The robots are programmed in a Scratch-based programming environment. The graphical programming interface makes learning easy and fast, even for beginners.

Thematics:
1.day
• Getting to know each other, team building
• Introduction to the RIDE methodology
• Introduction to ArTeC robot building and Scratch-based programming I. (building, DC motors, LED, Buzzer, Touch sensor)
