Description

The CLIL for Secondary Teachers course is a practical course that gives Secondary Teachers the opportunity to explore how language instruction can be integrated into their classroom practice.

The course looks at the main features that characterise the CLIL methodology and explores different approaches to CLIL, from subject-led ‘hard CLIL’ (with a strong focus on subject knowledge), to language-led ‘soft CLIL’ (where curricular topics are taught during a language programme). As a result, the course has broad appeal and is suitable for subject teachers and language teachers who want to know more about this methodology.

Participants examine the role of language in CLIL and are supported in their own language development, with a dual focus on language for teaching and language for learning. Teachers explore language for interaction, language for instruction, cross-curricular academic language, and subject-specific vocabulary.

Participants look at different ways of guiding their students thro

Learning objectives

By the end of this course teachers should be better able to:

  • understand the core concepts of the CLIL Methodology at Secondary level.
  • identify the language demands of their curricular subjects.
  • adapt and develop materials and resources to support their students in their CLIL learning.
  • design CLIL-based teaching and learning activities.
  • use techniques to help students read and listen in the target language.
  • support their students in producing the target language (both written and spoken).
  • understand how to integrate assessment of subject content and language.
  • plan CLIL-based lessons and units of work with confidence.
  • support colleagues in CLIL teams to implement a cross-curricular approach to content and language integrated learning.

Methodology & assessment

The course is run over one week and consists of 20 hours of onsite training with course trainers plus 10 hours of trainer-directed project work. The approach is very-much communicative and goal-oriented with participants working to complete project tasks, including the development of a portfolio of lesson resources and materials. Participants are given feedback on their project work by the course trainers. In addition, participants plan a CLIL unit of work which they present to their colleagues on their final day, receiving both peer- and trainer feedback on their plans and materials.
