The Network of European Blue Schools

The Network of European Blue Schools is part of the EU4Ocean Coalition, an initiative funded by the European Commission, Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (DG MARE). We are a hub for all schools and teachers that strive to engage students with oceanic, marine, or water topics and raise awareness on issues related to those environments. The concept of a European Blue School evolved from the marine education expertise gathered from consultations with teachers and educators across Europe. It acknowledges the variety of cultures and school communities from the 27 EU Member States and champions the concept of open schooling – encouraging the development of local partnerships to make the learning context relevant. The challenges that the work of teachers faces are many, but through the Network of European Blue Schools, you will not be working alone. All teachers are invited to join this effort to promote ocean literacy by taking the ocean into their classroom, helping to make it everyone’s concern, no matter where you are. Teachers are mentors and inspirational figures for students and the subjects they choose at school, as well as their future career choices and attitudes toward the environment.

European Blue School Certificate

The European Blue School Certificate is awarded by the EU4Ocean Coalition to schools that successfully connect students with the ocean through innovative, interdisciplinary, and action-oriented educational projects.

This certification recognizes schools that:

Promote marine literacy and deepen students’ understanding of ocean-related challenges.

Develop projects that raise awareness of the importance of protecting marine ecosystems.

Encourage students to take an active role in preserving the ocean through creativity, science, and cooperation.

By achieving this certificate, schools demonstrate their commitment to becoming true Ocean Advocates, contributing to the European Union’s goal of building a more sustainable blue planet.

The Lumen School receives this recognition thanks to the project “How could you help sea turtles and reduce the percentage of deaths?”, which reflects a strong engagement with marine protection and student empowerment.

Our Blue School

Our Blue School - Colegiul Mihai Viteazul Ineu

A European Blue School brings the ocean to the classroom through project-based learning and engages students in marine education topics to update their knowledge of the ocean and the blue planet.
The ‘Our Blue School’ project, implemented in our school, was attended by pupils from the primary school who carried out theoretical activities of connecting with nature and participated in an online blue workshop offered by the Mare Nostrum NGO, Constanta.
On our journey to renew our European Blue School certificate, our college professors and students have improved their knowledge of the ocean and developed a sense of responsibility towards our planet.

Flowing Together: Empowering efforts to revitalize the Fan River!

Certificate

My name is Arberora, and I am an English language teacher at Pashko Vasa School in Rrëshen, Albania. I always try to inspire my students not only teaching language skills but also integrating meaningful projects that connect them to global and environmental issues.

Our school has been awarded with the Associated European Blue School status for the 2024/2025 school year, recognizing our dedication to sustainability and environmental awareness. This certification was awarded for our project, "Flowing Together: Empowering Efforts to Revitalize the Fan River!", which focuses on preserving and restoring the natural beauty of the Fan River, an important part of our local ecosystem.

Through my role as a teacher I aim to equip students with strong language skills and also encouraging them to become responsible global citizens who care about their environment and community.
