Walking Together 2020-2023

According to the World Values Survey, among the least racially tolerant countries are Portugal, Turkey and Italy while some of the most tolerant countries are Greece, Spain and Poland. In TR exists an alarmingly strident xenophobia towards immigrants regardless of the individuals' country of origin or citizenship. Almost 40% of the population supports the repatriation of unemployed immigrants, and 22% supports forcible repatriation of all immigrants according to a study published by the Human Rights Documentation Center. Over the past 10 years Italy has faced a dramatic increase in immigration. There is an increasing concern about the negative portrayal of immigrants and also minorities as racism and xenophobia have boiled over into violence. In Portugal, a deterioration of the general climate of tolerance is visible as discrimination against refugees and minorities is very high. Greeks face disadvantages, discrimination, unequal treatment, segregation and harassment. The main problem faced by the Polish society is the immigrants’ integration into the labour market, racism and xenophobia at the workplace. As each partner country is home to a number of national, ethnic minorities and immigrants, with the same motivation, project partners have decided to implement a project on social inclusion of pupils at their school who have a similar background with these groups. Moreover, there are not only immigrants or minorities who should become an integrated part of our schools, there are also other disadvantaged groups like pupils with special needs and others. The motivation of this project is to improve their social inclusion, as well. During the time of project activities we expect to bring people (students, teachers, parents and people from the community) with different social background together. Thus we aim to raise awareness for different lives in general. During this process students also become aware of their own lives, share it with other students from other countries and their knowledge, understanding and tolerance of different cultures will increase. The project will contribute to intercultural dialogue, encouraging students to be open to new cultures and providing a great opportunity to see the importance of meeting with people who represent them to bring about a better mutual understanding, and ultimately a better coexistence.
