"The Other Side of the Street"

The fight against social inequalities was one of the most important issues for European voters in the European Parliament elections in June 2024. Many Europeans thought this should be one of the highest priorities for EU policy-makers according to the outcome of a poll by Ipsos for Euronews. The poll included 18 countries representing 96% of the EU's population. Inequality has become one of the main concerns for EU citizens. The 2017 Eurobarometer survey* already showed that an overwhelming majority of people in Europe thought that income inequality in their country was too high and that their governments should take measures to reduce it. In the 2021 Eurobarometer survey equality of opportunities was deemed the most important issue for the EU’s economic and social development. This highlights public perceptions of unfairness about the impact of public policies on inequalities, which may also feed discontent and mistrust towards institutions and governments. Reducing (social) inequality is indeed one of the priorities of the EU. Tackling inequalities is also one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. SDG 10 aims at reducing by 2030 inequalities that persist within and among countries and that are based on income, sex, age, disability, sexual orientation, race, class, ethnicity, religion and opportunity. Other SDGs relate to reducing inequality as well. But how? In this project, students research and discuss social inequality in the EU. What are its causes, impact and where can it lead? Can it disrupt societies? Students will also develop an action plan to reduce social inequality. Over 100 students from 50 different EPAS schools will collaborate in international teams on the project. They will discuss the outcome of their research, share their experiences, expectations, ideas, and emotions with their teammates. They participate in forums, exchange views and share the outcome of their tasks in Twinspace, in joint online meetings and with junior ambassadors in their respective European Parliament Ambassador Schools. They will be offered feedback on their research by experts (professors, MEP’s etc)
