Looking through the Picture Frame

Looking through the Picture Frame is a history and art based project for students between the ages of 12 to 16 years that utilizes fine art paintings to explore various aspects of our past. Teachers will select five paintings from local or national art collections made during the one hundred year period from 1850 to 1950. The designated class group will choose one painting from this selection. After a period of investigation and analysis the class group will then contextualize the subject matter or content of the painting in terms of the social, economic, industrial, political and cultural history of its time. In addition, they will carry out an investigation into the life and work of the artist. Findings will be presented in an online or printed magazine. The project will begin on the 1st September 2017 and end on the 1st June 2018.
