Wielkanoc, zwana także Paschą (aramejskim, greckim, świętym) lub Niedzielą Zmartwychwstania, to Chrześcijańskie święto i święto kulturowe upamiętniające zmartwychwstanie Jezusa, członek Nowego Testamentu jako miejsce tego dnia jego pochówku po ukrzyżowaniu przez Rzymian na Kalwarii ok. 30 ne. Dzieci uwielbiają te wiosenne wakacje, bo mają przy tym dużo frajdy :)

Easter in Poland

Palm Sunday (Niedziela Palmowa)

The Sunday before Easter is known as Niedziela Palmowa - Palm Sunday in English. This day marks the end of Lent and the beginning of the Holy Week. The Palm Sunday is celebrated just one week before Easter and  is considered as the first sign of Easter time.   It remins us of The day when Jesus Christ entered Jerusalem on a donkey, while people were holding palm branches and singing. On this day, people bring palms to the church for a blessing. Since palm trees are very rare in Poland, they often bring pussy willows or 'palms' made of paper flowers, dried flowers, and twigs. Every year on Palm Sunday in Lipnica Murowana, takes place a competition for the longest Easter palm. So far, the highest one reported was in 2011, at 36 meters (118 ft).

Decorating Easter Eggs (pisanki)

Decorating Easter Eggs is an essential part of Easter in Poland.  The word pisanki is used today to describe all types of decorated eggs in Poland but there are actually a number of different decorating methods. Adults at home and children at schools decorate hard-boiled eggs in shells: with paints, markers, crayons. During the Easter season, you can find in Polish stores and even small delis paints and stickers dedicated to Easter egg decoration.There are some (organic and old-fashion) ways of dyeing eggs with the food you already have in your pantry. People often dye eggs using natural coloring from foods such as onion skins, purple cabbage, spinach and more. After the eggs are dyed, they will use a razor or other sharp tool to scratch a design on the egg. Another method is to paint the egg using a hot colorful wax.

Good Friday (Wielki Piątek ) Good Friday commemorates the passion and crucifixion of Jesus. In major cities in Poland, there are processions on the streets – people carrying a huge cross and contemplating the passion of Jesus. In Poland, for many people, it’s a day of fasting – no meat, no parties, no alcohol.

Holy Saturday (Wielka Sobota)

During this day, people take baskets filled with food (called in Polish święconka)to the Church to get a special blessing. These baskets are lined with a white cloth and filled with foods that will be eaten at the Easter meal. Basket usually include eggs (symbol of rebirth), sausage, ham, salt and pepper, bread, horseradish, a small babka, and a lamb made from sugar. People take these baskets to the church where they will be blessed by the priest. The food from the Święconka basket after the blessing is shared the next morning during the festive Easter breakfast.

Sunday, The Easter Day (Wielkanoc)

It is a Bank holiday in Poland . On that day we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. Many people in Poland start their day  with 6 am morning mass (Resurekcja).  
The most important event of the day is a family breakfast. Before the meal begins, everyone takes a slice of blessed egg (święconka) and wishes everyone at the table Wesołego Alleluja (Joyful Hallelujah ). Later it is a tradition to eat żurek. Żurek (Sour Bread Soup) is a soup often served inside a whole small bread.

Śmigus-Dyngus (The Wet Monday of Easter)

This is a Bank holiday in Poland so people have time for some fun. Originally, single men chase women and throw water over them. (it was  seen as a form of affection). Today, people use buckets (kids usually play with water guns) to soak each other with water.
